I’m sure that is what the woman felt like after she realized what had happened.

Over the course of the scam she received letters from the President of Nigeria, FBI Director Mueller, and President Bush. They gave her dire warnings — if she didn’t continue sending the money, it could fall into terrorist hands. Of course, all the letters were entirely fake.

I won’t use the word stupid, but gullible definitely applies.

The Warcraft Retrospective

A look back to the beginnings of the biggest MMO of our time. Some of the information I knew, but there was a lot I hadn’t heard before. I’m still impressed with how Warcraft II has held up over the years (imho) in terms of graphics/color choices. Of course I could be biased as I still love to play the game. :)

Gaming without sound?

“Somebody had started a conversation about how Doom 3 wasn’t subtitled at all, and they wondered if somebody could help,” says Kimball. “People started posting on the board with really insensitive, nasty things, saying that deaf people shouldn’t be playing Doom because Doom is all about sound and atmosphere.”

Check out the article for how the mod team dealt with this. Pretty cool!

I’m not (yet) hearing challenged, disabled or whatever the “PC” term is, but I can completely appreciate the effort in this area. I’ve become a huge fan of subtitles as I either have trouble keeping up with all of the dialogue going on or the accents.

That and either myself or the wife are making comments about what we’re watching. ;)

From the article:

Film studio Red Eagle Entertainment plans to adapt the immensely popular Wheel of Time fantasy novels into videogames.

These will be developed in-house alongside the big-screen productions, according to VentureBeat – and Red Eagle plans to deliver a new game with every film based on the franchise it releases.

There are even plans for spin-off massively-multiplayer online game.

Sweet!

Let’s hope they don’t pull a Dungeons & Dragons with this franchise…

Momentous moments

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

I was going through my stuff this morning trying to organize the clutter and came upon this quote:

It’s funny how momentous moments of your life always seem to occur without much fanfare

I jotted that down when I found out I was selected for my present job over a year ago. I still feel it was a big step forward, but reality has a way of killing the ‘buzz’ occasionally. When that happens I just keep moving forward and come out of the fog eventually.

That’s when I’m reminded that God has really been good to me.

The Witcher sells 1M copies!

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Congrats to CD Projekt for this well earned milestone!

From the article:

“We tried to treat people well, and they’ve treated us well,” said Kacinski, revealing CD Projekt’s shocking, forward-thinking strategy. Gamers have repaid CD Projekt by spreading the word of the game and encouraging others to buy the original copy; pirating would mean being disloyal to a company that has shown gamers nothing but loyalty. An emotional connection with a company and a product is therefore established.

Duh. :) Treat your customers respectfully and they will in turn do their best to let all of their friends know.

At the end of the article is this treat:

As for the future of The Witcher, CD Projekt “wouldn’t be very smart,” according to Kicinski, if it didn’t revisit the universe. An announcement is possible in the near future. “We for sure will stay in this world [of The Witcher]. We’ve grown very comfortable with it. We still have a lot of cool ideas that didn’t make it into the first Witcher, so there will definitely be something more from The Witcher world.”

:D

Atari sues non-gamers for illegal sharing

Now copyright owners in the gaming industry may be resorting to similar thuggish tactics to fight growing software piracy. Gill and Ken Murdoch, senior citizens from Scotland, aged 54 and 66 respectively, received alarming legal threats warning them of an impending lawsuit if they did not £500 ($815 USD) compensation to Atari. They were accused of stealing the game Race07.

However, like the RIAA, its results seem to be lacking any kind of evidence or consistency. For example, the Murdochs hardly used a computer and never had gamed in their life. They describe, ”We do not have, and have never had, any computer game or sharing software. We did not even know what ‘peer to peer’ was until we received the letter.”

That figures. Here I was thinking that perhaps Atari would be different than EA, Ubisoft and others and show some sense. I guess not.
